In an effort to analyze myself in a way that proves not to be too self-indulgent, I considered the other day things friends and family have said about me recently. It didn’t take me long to realize that a common opinion kept coming up…
Angela, you ask a lot of questions!
Depending on the way this was said, it could easily send me into a spiral of wondering whether this was meant as a compliment or a subconscious dig. Was I asking too many questions? Should I stop asking as many as I am?
Fortunately, reassurance often came, and quickly.
In a good way, of course! You’re very intentional in how you get to know people.
Phew. A sigh of relief, truly. I was grateful to be perceived in this way. Which got me to thinking…why don’t we all ask more questions?
Questions are an easy thing, really. You want to know something? Ask. You’re about to make an assumption? Don’t. Just ask!
Questions help you know someone better. They provide a look into a person in a way not much else can. How people speak about themselves, and others, when answering questions, offers a gateway into their mind and heart.
It was by asking questions that I was able to understand my teammates so well this summer. And, actually, these questions often offered a glimpse into parts of myself I hadn’t come to know yet.
Questions don’t just help with people skills, though. Asking questions can also provide insight into how things are done. Curiosity, often furthered by a question, is one of the best things people can experience. There is something about invoking the mind to ask questions others may be afraid to ask. To dig a little deeper than we’re used to.
Questions are great. The more you ask, the more you know. Throughout your week, I challenge you to think a little deeper, and ask more questions. Maybe you’ll learn something about someone, or even yourself!
