My Favorite Cyberpunk Movies
On January 30th, I watched Blade Runner 2049 for the first time. I had seen the original (& adored it) but hadn’t made time for Denis Villeneuve’s sequel.
Talk about one of the best solo-watching experiences I’ve had.
Before I continue, for anyone who is wondering, Cyberpunk is a subgenre of Science Fiction with a focus on a high-tech, low-life dystopian future. This genre started to grow in the 80s and has captivated audiences with its surrealism and technological emphasis. It’s a genre I’m still learning about, and have been enjoying ever since!
Without further ado, here is a list of my favorite cyberpunk movies I’ve seen so far.
1) Blade Runner (1982)
Considered the birth of the cyberpunk film-space, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is the perfect mix of neo-noir, tech-centered, and brooding atmosphere that puts you into the world when you’re watching. This list wouldn’t exist without this movie!
2) Videodrome (1983)
I went into this movie blind which was definitely the right choice. It’s really cool, and really weird. Cronenberg (the director) movies are all weird. And there isn’t much else I can say without spoiling it, so if weird is your thing, feel free to give her a go.
3) Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Looking back at my Letterboxd review, all I said for this movie was “blade runner vibes.” I mean…true! Lol. It’s animated, it’s cool, great movie!
4) The Matrix (1999)
Having just rewatched this masterclass in filmmaking, I am a proud stan of the Matrix! The editing, the acting, the action sequences, the plot. All of it comes together to form a cohesive movie that withstands the test of time.
5) Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
The movie that kick started my cyberpunk spiral…Ryan Gosling, you deserve the world! Denis Villeneuve’s direction is stellar, Hans Zimmer’s impeccable score, and the cinematography. This movie rocks, watch it!
If you are a cyberpunk fan, what are some of your favorite films in the subgenre? Which ones should I watch next?
